The 2004 season saw some exciting new projects in London which would eventually make the transfer to Broadway with mixed successes. Revivals of classic shows continued to play on Broadway, offering theatre goers a more nostalgic view of what theatre can offer.

Over on Broadway, 2004 was all about the heated contest for Best Musical in that year’s Tony Awards ceremony. Crowd pleasers Wicked and Avenue Q both fought for the accolade in a ruthless battle, mirroring that of a presidential election. 2004 was a big year for the National Theatre, with new Artistic Director Nicholas Hytner starting the year strong, announcing his cutting edge plans to reduce ticket costs and make the venue as accessible as possible to everyone, regardless of price. 2004 Awards

2004 saw the fight for Best Musical between Avenue Q and Wicked reach fever pitch, with the former spending over $300,000 on marketing to ensure voters supported the smaller show.
