After the excitement of the 2009 awards season this year was relatively subdued. Not as many new shows opened in New York or London, resulting in an uncontested race for Best Musical Awards. Performance awards however were fiercely contested on both sides, deservedly won for Mark Rylance in London and Denzel Washington in New York. The Tony Award ceremony lacked the glamour of previous years, with the best performances coming from the revivals rather than the new shows. Catherine Zeta-Jones gave a rather embarrassing acceptance speech as she kicked off the trend for rewarding celebrities for ‘having a go’ rather than judging purely on merit.
