stowe Saw a lot of plays in 1998. And I went into each and every one of them hoping for the best. Always hoping to be, if not downright transported, then at least to come away having learned something new. To come out of the play knowing more than I did when I went in. For along with hope, I also take into each and every play what I call "The Paula Vogel 2 Hours Closer To Death Test". Ms. Vogel rightly figures that whenever she enters a play, when she comes out, she'll be 2 hours closer to her date with da Reaper. The bottom line is: was it worth it? During my personal application of the PV2HCTD test over this past year, there were a number of times when the answer was definitely a "hell, no." There were nights I aged tremendously over that span of 2 hours. And during a few shows, death seemed a welcome alternative to the spew before me. But there were a number of positive theatrical experiences during 1998, plays and performances which passed Ms. Vogel's test with flying colors. 10 of those are affectionately recounted here. Order is more or less alphabetical. |
