2008 Awards

Tony Award (Wikipedia)

The 2008 Awards Season reflected the poor year for new musicals, with a Mozart Opera winning Best Musical in London and a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein taking home the awards in New York. In the Heights was able to flourish in this somewhat ‘weak’ year, winning Best Musical despite being far from incredible. In London performance awards went to the leads of Hairspray in a controversial move overlooking some fine acting talent from the Donmar’s Parade the previous year. The Tony Awards Ceremony will be remembered for Patti LuPone’s performance and its presenter Whoopi Goldberg. The evening was opened by The Lion King which celebrated its 10th year on Broadway.
